What is a 24hr Holter Monitor?
A Holter monitor test is an ambulatory monitoring procedure, It’s a non-invasive test that uses a small, wearable heart monitor to record an electrical trace of your heartbeat continuously for up to 24 hours, providing information about the electrical function of the heart.
Your doctor uses this test to see what your heart’s electrical system is doing over a 24-hour period. This may help to find reasons for some problems such as abnormal or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, faints, blackouts, palpitations, or to check pacemaker function.

- On the day the Holter monitor is being attached, it is recommended that you wear loose-fitting clothing; this allows for easier fitting of the device.

- At the completion of 24 hours, you can remove the machine and cuff yourself, and it must be returned the following day to the same clinic you had the appointment at or as instructed by the technician. If it’s worn on a Friday, please make sure that it’s taken off and switched off after 24 hrs on Saturday and returned on Monday for the machine data to be analysed.

Before the monitor is fitted your skin is wiped clean, with any excess hair shaved and dirt removed to help the electrodes stay in place. Each electrode is snapped into position, and the recording device is placed at the centre of your chest. The backing is peeled off each electrode before it’s stuck firmly to your chest to ensure a secure connection. Once fitted, a flashing indicator on the device shows the test has begun.
If you notice any symptoms during the 24 hours, double-tap the device to mark the moment and note it in your patient diary.

No, the monitor needs to stay dry for the full 24 hours, so showering and bathing aren’t recommended while it’s fitted. Your clinic can advise on how best to manage this over the test period.
Yes, you wear the monitor continuously, including while you sleep, so the full 24-hour recording is captured. Try to avoid positions that might dislodge the electrode.
Yes. An underwire bra is fine, but a wireless bra or crop top is usually more comfortable while wearing the monitor. A front-fastening style can also make it easier to dress without disturbing the electrodes.
A Holter monitor is non-invasive and generally very safe. The main thing to watch for is a skin reaction to the electrode adhesive, such as redness, itchiness or a rash, which can appear straight away or up to 24 hours after the test. If this happens, remove the electrodes and seek medical advice.
Your Holter monitor results are sent to your referring doctor, typically within 4 business days. Your doctor will go through the results with you and explain what they mean for your care.
