Dr Deepak Haikerwal

Dr Deepak Haikerwal is a Senior Consultant Cardiologist who has been serving the Western and North Western suburbs of Melbourne since 2001. He completed his advanced training in Cardiology at The Alfred Hospital in 1999 and his PhD from the Baker Heart and Diabetes Research Institute, Melbourne in 2001. Following this he was appointed Director of Cardiology at Sunshine Hospital. Deepak has been (and continues) to be instrumental in the development of community ambulatory services with Heartwest since 2001, making it the largest provider of cardiac services in the West. He was the primary founder of Heartwest and has been integral in the expansion and growth of these cardiology services in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Heartwest continues to provide a comprehensive cardiac care and state of the art diagnostic service to the community.

Deepak helped in the establishment, the development and growth of hospital inpatient cardiac services at Western Private Hospital. He has recently started to help grow and expand services at St Vincents Private Hospital in Werribee.

Integral to improving the cardiac care of the community, Deepak has encouraged collaborations with other health organisations to enhance quality outcomes. In 2020, Deepak negotiated a unique collaboration with Baker Institute in Melbourne.

This partnership has enabled essential research activities in the area of heart disease and diabetes. Multiple successful public health and clinical trials are conducted at the Hoppers crossing Heartwest precinct. This is envisaged to expand in the coming months and years.

With his extensive breadth of knowledge and experience, Deepak has keen interest in all areas of cardiology, including ischaemic heart disease, atherosclerosis and primary prevention, heart failure management, arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation management. He is expertly trained in performing invasive coronary angiography, right heart studies and transoesophageal echocardiograms. He reports on transthoracic echocardiograms and stress echocardiograms.

Deepak maintains appointments in the cardiology department at various hospitals around Melbourne including Western Health, The Alfred Hospital, St Vincents Private Health, Epworth, Cabrini and Western Private Hospital.

Deepak has always lived in the Western Suburbs and has been passionate and committed to providing the best cardiology care and improving the overall health of its community. In his spare time he loves being with his family. He enjoys watching sports, movies, reading and the Performing Arts.
