HeartWest provides high-quality, accessible, and comprehensive care with expertise, care, and empathy from doctors, sonographers and staff.

HeartWest was founded in 2001 by Cardiologists living and working locally to improve access to high-quality cardiac care for communities in the west and northwest of Melbourne. Since 2001, we’ve grown to five dedicated clinics across Hoppers Crossing, Williamstown, Essendon North, St. Albans and Coolaroo.

With a leading team of more than 20 cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and affiliated specialists, we provide comprehensive end-to-end cardiac care across consultations, diagnostic testing, and inpatient procedures. Importantly, as a group, our combined experience encompasses all applicable cardiac sub-specialties, including general cardiology, congenital heart disease, imaging, interventional cardiology, structural heart disease, and electrophysiology.

HeartWest doctors are also supporting the advancement of cardiology research and treatment as leaders in a range of advanced clinical trials, and are affiliated with various public and private hospitals across Melbourne, providing patients with access to leading cardiac care in their communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to HeartWest’s FAQ page. Here, you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about appointments, wait times, parking and more. If you still have questions, please email us at admin@heartwest.au.

Do I need a referral?

Yes. A referral is a document from your General practitioner that allows you to see a specialist or get specific tests. It includes details about your medical condition and is needed for Medicare to cover costs.

A valid referral includes the referral date, the medical service/test, the referring doctor’s provider number, and the treating doctor’s names/address. GP referrals are valid for 12 months, specialists for 3 months.

Ensure your referral is not expired to receive Medicare reimbursement.

Is there parking at the clinic

Yes. Directions to the clinic including parking can be found on the individual clinic location pages in our ‘contact us’ menu.

What is HeartWest’s billing policy?

For all information related to fees and billing, please click here.

When do I get my test results and what happens next?

Heartwest will send your results to your referring doctor as soon as they are available via fax / electronic delivery / post, according to their preference. Typically, the doctor who ordered the test will review the results and discuss them with you.  It is important to schedule an appointment with your doctor to review and discuss your results as soon as they are available.

It typically takes 5-7 business days for most of the results.

How can I prepare for my test?

All details about a service and its preparation can be found on the service page. Simply select the service from our main menu and scroll down to the ‘what to expect’ section. Additionally, information sheets are available in each clinic and describe the procedures. Please read them before your test.

What if I’m an overseas visitor?

Yes, you can still book an appointment with our doctors as you may be covered by travel insurance or other types of insurance if you are an overseas visitor. It would be best to contact your insurer for further instructions regarding what you should do about medical fees. In general, you will need to pay your fees in full on the day, and seek reimbursement from your insurer later. Some insurers will need to pre-approve your medical treatment before agreeing to any reimbursement for your medical costs.

Can a family member or friend call the practice on my behalf?

HeartWest Cardiology deeply values the support of family and friends throughout a patient’s healthcare journey.

A family member is allowed to book, reschedule or cancel an appointment on behalf of the patient. However, if they want to discuss or request any test results or other sensitive information, trusted individuals must ensure that they provide us with a written consent from the patient. This policy is in place to uphold patient confidentiality. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
